While a majority of homeowners are familiar with common lawn weeds like poison ivy and dandelions, there are several unfamiliar types that have a tendency to creep into lawns across the United States.

Additionally, you will need to determine which weeds you want removed from your lawn (some weeds are non-obtrusive). Clover, for instance, was once considered a desirable weed, but later became known as a common lawn weed because it didn’t have the same appearance as regular grass.

Today, clover is making a comeback. Now considered an enhancement to the lawn due to its attractive evergreen hue, clover has also been found to lift the soil’s nitrogen levels and conceal other weeds. What’s more, clover is resistant to disease. As a result, garden centers are beginning to offer clover and consumers are beginning to buy it.

Common Lawn Weeds

The Weed: Dallis Grass

The Characteristics: Perennial grass; light green in color; extended seed heads that stick out from top; flourishes in damp areas with plenty of heat (southern U.S.).
The Weed: Quackgrass

The Characteristics: Forms clumps; long, tapered, bluish-green blades; a perennial grass; especially found in northern U.S.

The Weed: Japanese Clover

The Characteristics: Wiry summer annual; oblong leaflets in groups of three; wooded stem with purplish single flowers that show up in late summer. Prefers damp, sandy or clay soils and usually found on riverbanks, waste ground and roadsides in the southeastern U.S.
The Weed: Witch Grass

The Characteristics: Has a large purplish flower that resembles a broom; a summer annual grass; bushy and hairy; branches from the base; found in all of U.S. excluding the Northern Plains.
The Weed: Goose Grass

The Characteristics: A summer annual grass; finger-like stems at top; whitish-silver mat; clumping grass; flat stems in a low rosette; found in areas of heavy traffic that are compressed; generates seeds even after close mowing.
