How do I treat my lawn that was seeded and reseeded last year and was overrun with Crabgrass?

Question by jsant201: How do I treat my lawn that was seeded and reseeded last year and was overrun with Crabgrass?
My lawn was seeded late Spring last year. It appears that the seed may have had a crabgrass mix. I reseeded areas of my lawn in the early Fall and applied a winterizer fertilizer in late Fall. How do I handle this issue this upcoming season? I want to eliminate the crabgrass and develop a healthy lawn.

Treat your lawn with a crabgrass killer. There are several out there. I posted one example below. After the crabgrass has been eliminated or greatly reduced then re-seed your lawn.

You need to apply a fertilizer that has a crabgrass preventer in it. Crabgrass is an annual grass that comes up from seed every year. The crabgrass preventer will prevent the seeds from germinating.

A good time to apply it is when the ground temperature is around 55 to 60 degrees. If you are in doubt about when to apply, try calling some lawn and landscaping companies in your area.

Note that the preventer will also keep other desirable seeds from germinating, so you may have to wait until late summer or fall to reseed those areas with grass.
