Lawn Treatment?

Question by JC: Lawn Treatment?
I have a lawn that dies last year, weeds of all sorts, insects and bear spots. I have some grub treatment and crabgrass prevention with fertilizer. I think I may need to re-seed. What order should I do the grub and insect treatment, crabgrass & fert, and seeding?

Thank you
How do I air rate my lawn please?
How can I aerating the lawn, pitch fork or shovel?

Try aerating your lawn before using any chemicals. This will help the soil to absorb anything you apply and will help the seeds to set deeper roots. You will need to kill the insects before seeding so I would start with the exterminating first. Then move on to preparing your soil with fertilizers and nutrients. Your soil needs to be the right consistency as well. Too compacted and nothing will grow. You can usually get your soil tested at your local feed and seed store and some home stores like Lowe’s and the Home Depot. They can tell you PH levels and what your soil needs to grow strong grass. A good book on the subject can be very helpful too. Ortho has several out on gardening, lawns and flowers.

it’s all common sense get rid of the rubbish first then seed then fertilise if you do it by the moon cycle then you’ll get results next day for planting/ sowing 16th 17th april next day for fertilising 21st april you will see it works:) before I’d done that everything green in my care died, now we have a jungle in the house:))

YUP we had a mess too..We had rented our home for a few years and when we came back home our gorgeous yard was a total mess..Weeds, Grubs, ants..And the meanest part was our real estate rental company assured us that our renter had a lawn and garden service in town…
The yards he was paid to take care of were ok but ours was a total mess..We had to start from scratch to undo an acre of weeds, grubs and ants back to the LUSH golf course soft green bermuda it was before we rented..
Thank God our yard was forgiving and it took a few years..but we finally have our front and lower back yards in good shape and the side hill and far back acre is going to be fine this year…
The first thing we did was clear out all the weeds and thissle and bushes and thatch…We rented a dethatcher at a local shop…The dethatcher machine was a super!!!!! It got rid of years of the renters mowing weeds without using the grass catcher.
then we put down grass seed…and ordered a couple truck loads of top soil..in no time the grass came up…
Finally after notifying all the neighbors to keep their dogs and kids off the yard because we were putting down the fertilizer and the dangerous chemicals can hurt them…
we did this for a couple years..and now the yard is finally getting back in shape…

Good luck on your new yard…
