repair your yard with scotts ez seed aka watch grass grow :-)

I am not holding my breath that many people want to watch grass grow, however, I recently patched an area of my yard with a product that someone told me about and I was very pleased with the result. It is pretty cool when you use it….after watering it swells up and turns dark brown. It holds the moisture to keep the grass seed moist and apparently it has slow release nutrients that feed the seed as it take off. When it turns light brown, it is time to water it again. When I had to repair another section of the yard, I decided to do a vid and I’ll follow up if I see that anyone is actually watching this.

Question by idlecritic1: What kind of grass seed should I use for a partial shade area just cleared of ground cover?
I just cleared an area of ground cover (dead leaves). The area gets some sun but is often in the shade. It is primarily dirt now. Any tips on what type of grass seed would be good and what other things I would need to do to grow grass effectively in this area? Thanks!

i personally like Bermuda. its really pretty and likes partial shade. Does require a little more water then usual grass but it looks 10X better.

Thanks for the video. I have dead/brown patches right now and I’m going to give it a try.

@rsaxena3 You should see grass in about a week.

@RJB032162 That’s fantastic. Appreciate the post. Some people didn’t have good luck with it, but it worked great for me. Who’d of thought I’d get over 11,000 views on making grass grow, huh? LOL. Thanks!

THIS STUFF WORKS LIKE MAGIC!! OMG!! I put it on a small area in my yard on 6/30 and today is 7/9 and I have pretty green grass! OK??? I can’t believe it. I plan on putting it on other areas so the lawn will look full!! I LOVE THIS STUFF…

about how long does it take to grow?

  7. TomZentra says:

@Yewtoobnube I have had enough of this garbage product. Scotts is sending a refund. I will never buy any more of their stupid crap.

  8. Yewtoobnube says:

@TomZentra You follow the directions on everything that you buy and use? You don’t try to improve on anything? I do. That is why I mentioned it in the video. My goal was to grow grass in the bare spots in my yard. How I did it was up to me. Adding more grass seed = more grass. I am not here to endorse this product, I am interested in results.

  9. Yewtoobnube says:

@TomZentra I do not endorse the product. I just put it on here to show how it worked for me.

  10. TomZentra says:

@Yewtoobnube I spoke with someone at Home Depot about this product. He told me off the record that an all-in-one solution is destined to fail. Now it makes sense. Scotts offers a direct money back guarantee because they want customer feedback, rather than retailer feedback, such as “Customer did not like”. Scotts knows this product has a high failure rate.

  11. TomZentra says:

@Yewtoobnube You mentioned in the video that you added more grass seed beyond what comes in the EZ Seed. That isn’t the way it is supposed to work! No wonder you had good results.

  12. Yewtoobnube says:

    @BRIGHTMOOR1 You’re welcome.

  13. Yewtoobnube says:

@TomZentra Well, sorry you had no success. Worked great for me last year and I bought it again this year for other bad patches and it came in like gang busters again.

  14. TomZentra says:

I too had trouble with this product. Weeks later I still have yet to see any sprouts of grass. It was a complete waste of money and the effort I put into it.

ez Seed is the second bad product I have bought from Scotts this spring. I won’t buy any more of their products. They aren’t the high standard of quality as they were years ago.

  15. Yewtoobnube says:

@Melissamia9 hey, i’m really glad to hear it. i’m using it on some other spots in my yard this year!

  16. Melissamia9 says:

I should of took a before and after! it works excellent , its coming in nice green and thick!

  17. Yewtoobnube says:

@Janett323 wow, no sorry. several people have commentyed that they didn’t have great luck. i only posted it because it worked for me. I did some checking on line. not sure if this may help, but here’s what I found:

    Drought (or not enough moisture)
    Acidification from dog urine
    Nutrient deficiency
    Lowered pH
    Excess heat from the sun
Cutting too closely or too often
Killing action from too strong a herbicide mixture

Lemme know if it comes around for you.

I like your videos. Very down to earth and to the point, good honesty. I like. I have a question, if you do not mind. I put down this seed also. When the grass seeds didn’t start I thought I wasted my money, but after about 10 days, we got some seedlings. I had green grass in an area of my lawn, but now it is turning yellow. It started off green and the yellow area seems to be growing. Any ideas?

You should still put hay over it to deter birds from picking out the seed and eating it……just a light cover ,of course and water over it to keep the hay in place better …in case of heavy wind.

I used it……it’s not bad…..gotta water the heck out it.

    thank you.

  22. danyeo says:

@Yewtoobnube That, or this Ez-seed really needs to be put on in a thicker layer than what i used. I thought i put on the 1/8th amount it said on the label. Oh well, I’m doing ok with regular seed so why mess around with what works. Congrats on your lawn though.

  23. Yewtoobnube says:

@danyeo there ya go. maybe i was just lucky.

  24. danyeo says:

I have found this EZ-Seed is no better than using regular grass seed, and since the EZseed is very expensive compared to how much area it covers, it’s a ripoff to me. I planted an entire $30 bag of Ez-seed on April 17th. It’s the 29th and nothing has grown, and i watered everyday. During the same time i planted regular Scotts grass seeds and they have been coming up now for a few days.

I tried this product and the problem I had was if it dried out on top the seeds that germinated that had there roots growing through the mulch died it seemed to dry out quite fast

this is just an opinion..not for hsn…..if the patch perfect is so good send it to the moon or mars and grow an eco system there so life can get boosted like that.

    ITS A SCAM!!!

  30. guitarplayer4real says:

That all said.. This seed will most likely grow. It may even grow well but can it really repair any lawn properly. Nope!

Grass seed can be bought for a few dollars per pound and it needs little care in germination and it can be matched.. Perhaps covering it lightly with peat or steer manure after spreading is all thats needed, then watering..

All of this fancy coating which boasts this and that seems rediculous. I seed all the time, much cheaper per the square foot.
    Call a landscaper:-p

  31. guitarplayer4real says:

The absolute best thing you can do to repair your lawn is to support your local nursery or seed suppliers. Also, you can speak with any landscape supplier and get an almost perfect match for your particular lawn. Full sun, Full shade, heavy traffic areas, watering conditions, soil conditions ALL play a part in a healthy lawn, NEVER let these bogus TV “FIX ALL” commercials tell you anything. Your local landscape professionals are happy to answer questions and/ or help w/ the proper fix.

  32. guitarplayer4real says:

Hi, Firstly, I’m a licensed landscape contractor in the state of Oregon. I’ve been in the greens industry for over 25 years and in my professional opinion this is a scam product.
Not all grasses are created equal. Some have Fescue grass, some have shade tolerant grasses, some have Kentucky Bluegrass.. Some have blends of all the above. This seed cant possibly be any “perfect” match for your lawn, let alone even a decent match. Even the color’s of green can be vastly different.. Continued….

  34. twistedlemon21 says:

I hear a lot of naysayers claiming this is a scam product, that one bag only covers a few square feet at the required 0.25 inch thickness. Some say that it won’t grow on concrete as claimed, and that even 5 bags at $110 cannot grow a lawn on a concrete patio of 100 square feet. What do you say to these people?

  35. HSN says:

Actually, the vast majority of our videos Ilike this one) are recorded from our live TV show and are published on YouTube without editing. This was shot in our amazing outdoor studio. It’s surrounded on 3 sides by trees. But our HSN campus is literally inside a triangle bordered by an interstate, a major 6-lane east/west highway, and a 4-lane local road. So what you hear is what you get.
