I hate lawns. They are high maintenance, expensive, and waste a lot of water. If you have kids or something, I could see a rationalization for one, though. Anyway, I bought a duplex a few years back on 1/3 acre with mostly lawn as the landscaping. I tried having landscapers maintain the area, but they did not understand the concept of “landscape maintenance” versus “lawn mower”. So I fired them and took a shot at doing it myself. My lawn was not in the best condition. A friend of mine who is a landscaper recommended the Scott’s 4-step to get my lawn going again. I started on Step 3 a few months ago, and saw modest improvement, but improvement nonetheless. 3 weeks ago I did step 4, and holy crap!! I had to cut back my irrigation significantly the lawn was growing so fast. The weeds were getting crowded out, and my lawn was a beautiful dark green. I’m going to try the Scott’s winterizing stuff (not sure the name) before the winter months next.
Obvious Note: fertilizer will not make grass grow where the lawn is not properly irrigated. The good news is it will help you find those spots when the grass starts to flourish everywhere else; so you can make necessary irrigation adjustments/repairs.
