Unfortunately chemicals work best. But you can also try other chemical free treatments such as nematodes or Diatomaceous earth. These work best after you get the problem under control with chemicals. Check out info at

A lot of us take pride in our lawns, but would like to treat the earth more gently as we care for those lawns. Dave talks to Tom Kelly, of Fire Belly Organic Lawn Care, about a series of products that makes it easier to “go organic” with lawn care.

Go to petedge.com you can find lots there Adams is what I use also you can put a ceader maltch down where youre dog goes to cool off this will help also.
Have a place for pup to go when you treat for 2-4 hrs. I would also treat the home and dog at the same time

this will help keep all areas clean of pests or they will just move back

We have used a lawn product that we found at Home Depot in their lawn/garden department–I can’t remember the name of it, Max something. It is a chemical that you spray on, but you have to keep the dogs off of the lawn for awhile, which again, I can’t remember how long, but read the bottle. It worked great for us, and we didn’t have any more problems for the rest of the year last year. You can also sprinkle Sevin powder down, it is safe for dogs and will kill fleas, I’m not sure about tick, and you don’t have to keep them off the lawn, but will wash away with the rain. You can use diatemaceous earth, a kind of clay like material (food grade only, not pool grade), it will dehydrate the fleas/ticks and not hurt your dogs, but would be expensive for large areas. Horse people tend to use this in stables.

I would also suggest that you treat your dogs with Capstar, a pill that you can get from the vet that will kill all fleas within 30 minutes, and follow up with Frontline, so that you kill eveything on the dogs and the yard at the same time, or otherwise you’re going to be just be reinfesting everything. Good luck.
